Gout

What is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis characterized by sudden, severe attacks of joint pain, swelling, and inflammation. It results from a buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints, often affecting the big toe first but can also occur in other joints like the ankles, knees, and wrists

  • High levels of uric acid in the blood (hyperuricemia), either due to excessive production or impaired excretion by the kidneys.

  • Uric acid is a byproduct formed when the body breaks down purines, which are found in many protein-rich foods.

Gout occurs when there is too much uric acid in the body, which forms needle-shaped crystals in the joints.

This leads to inflammation and intense pain during a gout attack or "flare."cupiditate similique quisquam et deserunt, recusandae.

  • The main symptoms are sudden, severe joint pain (often in the big toe), swelling, redness, and warmth over the affected joint.

  • Gout attacks are triggered by factors like diet high in purines (found in red meat, organ meats, seafood), alcohol intake, obesity, and certain medications.

  • It is more common in men than women and often starts after age 40.[2][5] Women are more prone after menopause.

  • Risk factors include obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney disease, and genetics.

  • Gout can be effectively managed with medications to reduce uric acid levels and anti-inflammatory drugs during flares, along with dietary and lifestyle changes.

  • Untreated gout can lead to formation of lumps of uric acid crystals under the skin (tophi) and permanent joint damage over time.

The Insulin Resistance Link

Insulin resistance and high levels of uric acid often go hand-in-hand, creating a vicious cycle that can contribute to serious health issues like type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Let's break down how this cycle works and why it's important to keep both insulin resistance and uric acid levels in check.

Over time, this can lead to a buildup of glucose and other nutrients in the blood, setting the stage for conditions like prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and more.

Here's where uric acid comes into play. Multiple studies have found a strong association between insulin resistance and high levels of uric acid (also called hyperuricemia).

It's a two-way street:

  • Insulin resistance promotes high uric acid by:

- Increasing production of uric acid precursors.

- Causing the kidneys to reabsorb more uric acid instead of excreting it.

- Contributing to obesity and metabolic issues that further raise uric acid.

  • High uric acid levels can worsen insulin resistance by:

- Impairing insulin signaling pathways in cells.

- Generating oxidative stress that damages cells.

- Promoting inflammation that disrupts insulin's actions.

So insulin resistance raises uric acid, and high uric acid exacerbates insulin resistance - a vicious, self-reinforcing cycle.

Health Impacts

  • Type 2 diabetes [6][7]

  • Metabolic syndrome [6][7]

  • Cardiovascular disease [6][7]

  • Kidney disease[7]

  • Gout (from uric acid crystal buildup in joints) [7]

A recent meta-analysis found that treating hyperuricemia with uric acid-lowering drugs improved insulin sensitivity and reduced blood pressure, though it didn't significantly impact cholesterol levels.

This suggests getting uric acid under control could help manage insulin resistance, while addressing insulin resistance can help reduce the frequency, duration and presence of gout flares.

What to do?

It's important to work with your health care provider in the diagnosis and treatment of gout.

If you are looking for a more natural route than medications without all the complications, lets take a look at how the components of both products in Unicity's Feel Great System have been shown to help in independent studies involving yerba mate and fiber.

Unimate

Yerba mate, the main ingredient in Unimate, may help with uric acid levels and kidney function through the following pathways:

  • Reducing uric acid production by inhibiting the activity of xanthine oxidase, the enzyme responsible for producing uric acid from purine metabolism.

  • Increasing uric acid excretion through the kidneys, potentially by improving kidney function or increasing urine flow.

  • Providing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, which may help protect the kidneys from oxidative stress and inflammation that can contribute to impaired uric acid excretion.

  • Potential lipid-lowering effects, as high lipid levels are associated with an increased risk of kidney disease and impaired uric acid excretion.

Balance

Dietary fiber, a key component of Balance, can help alleviate inflammation caused by gout through the following mechanisms:

  • Promoting the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs)by gut microorganisms. SCFAs like acetate induce apoptosis (programmed cell death) of neutrophils, which are the inflammatory cells that drive gout attacks when they react to monosodium urate (MSU) crystals in the joints.

  • Enhancing the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines in the joints, further reducing inflammation and preventing joint damage during gout flares.

  • Aiding in weight management, as obesity is a major risk factor for gout. Losing excess weight can decrease uric acid levels and reduce pressure on painful joints.

  • Providing fiber-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes, which are typically low in purines, the compounds that break down into uric acid. A low-purine diet is recommended for gout patients to control uric acid levels.

In summary, the action of gut bacteria on dietary fibers produces anti-inflammatory SCFAs that resolve neutrophil-driven inflammation caused by MSU crystals in gout. Additionally, high-fiber foods are typically low in purines and can aid in weight loss, both of which help manage gout.

By incorporating Unimate and Balance into your diet, you may be able to better manage gout and its associated risk factors, such as insulin resistance, inflammation, and hyperuricemia.
