In fact, the right kinds of fats can actually help reduce inflammation, increase your metabolism, and encourage your body to burn fat instead of relying on sugar for fuel. The Trouble with
Polyunsaturated trans fats, particularly those high in omega-6 fatty acids like linoleic acid, can be problematic. Through a chain reaction, linoleic acid can produce pro-inflammatory markers in the body, leading to increased inflammation and insulin resistance .
One of the key mechanisms behind this process is mitochondrial dysfunction. Linoleic acid has been shown to damage cardiolipin, a crucial molecule in the inner mitochondrial membrane . This damage can lead to a leaky membrane, allowing protons to leak out of the mitochondrial matrix and impairing energy production. When our bodies are overloaded with omega-6s and lack sufficient omega-3s, there's an imbalance that can contribute to chronic inflammation.
